THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION,

Having regard to the Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community,

Having regard to Council Directive 2006/117/Euratom of 20 November 2006 on the supervision and control of shipments of radioactive waste and spent fuel, and in particular Article 17(2), second subparagraph thereof,

After consulting the advisory committee established by Article 21 of Directive 2006/117/Euratom,

Whereas:

(1) Commission Decision 2008/312/Euratom established a standard document for the supervision and control of shipments of radioactive waste and spent fuel within the scope of Directive 2006/117/Euratom.

(2) In the context of the reporting on the implementation of Directive 2006/117/Euratom, it was suggested that the authorisation registration number (ARN) of the initial shipment(s) be included in the standard document in applications for authorisation of return shipments.

(3) The inclusion of the ARN would enhance the traceability and verification of shipments of radioactive waste and spent fuel by enabling competent authorities to associate each shipment with the initially issued authorisation, thus reinforcing the legal and operational security of such movements.

(4) The standard document should therefore be updated.

(5) Decision 2008/312/Euratom should be amended accordingly.

HAS ADOPTED THIS DECISION:
