Not legal advice

Gelex shows you the law and where it comes from. It is a research tool, like a law library with a very good index. It is not a law firm and does not give legal advice.

Gelex has not launched yet. We may still adjust these pages before launch, for example once we have appointed our data protection officer. Every change is dated in the changelog at the foot of the page.

1. What we do

We hold the published text of legislation, case law and official guidance, in the versions that were in force over time, and help you find and read it. Answers written by an AI model point you to the sources; you, or your adviser, apply them to your situation.

2. What we don't do

  • We do not examine your individual case or tell you what you should do.
  • We do not represent anyone, before a court or otherwise.
  • Nobody at Gelex becomes your lawyer, and nothing you send us is covered by legal professional privilege.
  • Templates and drafting tools help you prepare your own documents, the way a form book does. You decide what goes in them.

3. For lawyers and advisers

If you advise clients, Gelex is a source you research with; the advice, and the professional responsibility for it, remain yours.

4. When to get advice

Talk to a qualified lawyer or tax adviser before you act where a lot is at stake, a deadline applies, another party has a lawyer, or the sources are unclear or conflict. In Denmark, Advokatsamfundet's directory lists practising lawyers; in Germany, the regional bar associations (Rechtsanwaltskammern) do.

5. Country notes

  • Denmark. Giving legal advice is not reserved to lawyers; the title "advokat" and representing others in court are. The Act on Legal Advice (lov om juridisk rådgivning, no. 419 of 9 May 2006) sets rules for businesses whose main activity is legal advice to consumers. Gelex gives no advice on anyone's case, so we assess that the Act does not apply to it.
  • Germany. A legal service is work on a concrete matter that needs a legal examination of the individual case (Rechtsdienstleistungsgesetz § 2(1)). The Federal Court of Justice held that a document generator the user fills in for their own matter is not one (BGH, 9 September 2021, I ZR 113/20, Smartlaw). Gelex's search, answers and templates work the same way.
  • Other countries. We assess each country's rules on legal services before we offer Gelex to consumers there, and add the result here.
